Ramada Kingman, Kingman, AZ
What a lovely find this inn was, right off the Interstate, pristine gardens, comfortable and clean room and a fantastic made-to-order complimentary breakfast!  Loved the colorful murals of stars of yesteryear on the outside walls. $54 per night (excl. tax) because we used our AARP discounts cards and the hotelcoupon.com booklet! Motel 6, Los Angeles, CA
This had to be the bargain of the year.  $56.99 per night (incl. tax) in the heart of Hollywood!  A few blocks away (0.38 mi) from the Red Line on the subway (Hollywood & Highland), this is the perfect location for a tourist in Los Angeles.  The hotel was a little rickety but just fine.  Hollywood Boulevard is within spitting distance and so is Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the Kodak Theatre, souvenir stores, the walk of fame, the subway station, bus lines, and so much more.  The Red Line on the subway will take you to Universal Studios and is just a stop or two away.  I highly recommended using this Motel 6—this was the third time I had stayed there and it's so central.  I also got complimentary coffee in the morning downstairs in the foyer. Fabulous condo-style accommodations right along the river.  Two-story apartments with beautiful decor and a decent kitchen, if you feel like catering yourself.  Bathrooms on both floors and a lovely shower upstairs.  There is a small balcony with a table and chairs off the main room downstairs that overlooks the rambling river outside.  Very convenient for a visit to the Rocky Mountain National Park and also to gorgeous shops and restaurants in Estes Park.  (9/11)

Red Roof Inn, Chicago, ILL
What a wonderful location in the heart of Chicago.  Lovely building a block off Michigan Ave (Magnificent Mile) and on many bus routes, and within walking distance of so many attractions such as the Hancock Center Observatory and the Water Tower and many top-of-the-range department stores.  Go the other way and you'll see the Wrigley Building and the Chicago River.  I even saw Alan Alda being interviewed on radio at the viewing window of the WGN Radio 720am building!  My room was terribly cramped and had a hairdryer and iron and ironing board. Hints and Tips (not necessarily relating to the above accommodations!)

  • Spend a little time reading a potential hotel's website for all the information you'll need.  You might get some ideas!  You can always call them and discuss things.
  • Always check the check-in and check-out times.  Most hotels are pretty flexible about their check-in times.
  • Most hotels have televisions but check out the website before you decide if you need a TV.
  • Pets are not usually accommodated, so be sure to check ahead of time.
  • Ask about handicap access if not noted on websites.
  • Hotels are not your own private "homes", so please be considerate when returning to your room late at night so as not to disturb other guests' vacations with noise and loud talking.  Just sayin'...
