I do love beautiful hotels, not that I can afford to stay in them, or eat in them. I can barely afford to take a stroll through them. I have walked through the illustrious Waldorf=Astoria in New York City though. This exquisite book features dishes from this Art Deco landmark hotel's three restaurants: the Bull and Bear, Oscar's, and the Peacock Alley. There is an interesting history of the hotel as well as photographs from days gone by you can enjoy. The original Waldorf=Astoria was where the Empire State Building is now. This Grand Dame of hotels, now on Park Avenue, sees the likes of Royalty, heads of state, celebrities, and affluent tourists. However, I do recall having a burger there many years ago and it was rather grand. Courses featured in this book include: Breakfast and Brunch; Cocktails and Hors D'Oevres; Soups; Appetizers; Salads; Fish and Seafood; Poultry and Meat; Desserts; Side Dishes, Condiments, and Basic Recipes. Recipes I was attracted to include "Breakfast Lemon Cake" (which I'll probably not use for breakfast!); "Snow Peas with Curried Crab Salad"; "Lentil Soup with Italian Sausage"; "Gruyère Cheese Soufflés with Prosciutto Chive Cream" (I'll wait to have this at the Waldorf!); "Pumpkin Pie with a Demitasse of Hot Chocolate", and some delicious side dishes. For those dreamers among us (hello!), we can now taste for ourselves meals served at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel. It's the next best thing to being there. The classic Waldorf Salad recipe is also included and a delightful "word" from Executive Chef, John Doherty. Beautifully illustrated and informative sidebars throughout.
