United States - On the Road (Insight Guides)

Published February 2010 - Softcover - 464 pages - $17.99

One of my favorite things to do is to take a road trip.  With the price of gas fluctuating so, it's difficult to decide where to go.  But, with a little research on the Internet for the best current prices of hotels/motels/car rentals, and this very helpful and informative guide, you're bound to find more than a few destinations to suit your budget and needs.  This edition from Insight Guides is every bit as useful as the others.  Full of fantastically alluring photos ("I wish I was there" good) to tempt you to try any of the five routes on offer: Atlantic Route, Northern Route, Central Route, Southern Route, and the Pacific Route, and so many places inbetween.  The book begins with "The Best of the United States: Top Attractions" which includes New York City, Big Sur, the Everglades, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon to name a few.  Whether you plan to drive a car, RV, sportscar, ride a motobrike or whatever, as long as you get there matters.  The map on pages 48/49 show the routes offered, but I noticed there wasn't a true "central" route to include I-70 and to take in the likes of Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Reno.  All of which are worth seeing or at least driving through.  Each route offers stages you can stick to or mix and match to your own schedule and/or timeline.  Each stop is loaded with information to enlighten you as you go, entice you to visit certain places of interest (or not), and guide you on a trip of a lifetime.  I would give my eye teeth to do many of these trips, the first one being the Pacific Coast Route.  You'll get to see the Carolinas, Florida, many big cities, rural plains and mountains, open skies, deserts, rivers, buttes, forests, and a lot of historical points of interest too.  There is a substantial Travel Tips section covering most larger cities to help your planning, which includes Accommodations, Eating Out, Transportation and Activities.  I loved the mileage chart and road signs—very helpful.
I also have to see South Dakota, parts of Florida, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Yellowstone Park.
Beautifully illustrated.
Conclusion - A thoroughly searched-out guide to whet your appetite for road travel in this country.  Highly recommended reading.
