Up Till Now - The Autobiography
by William Shatner
Thomas Dunne Books
ISBN 0-312-37265-5
Published May 2008 - Hardcover - 358 pages - $25.95

Canadian-born actor William Shatner (aka Captain James T. Kirk or Denny Crane to name a few) spills his guts in this book.  His sense of humor is evident throughout as he tells of his Montreal upbringing, his introduction and success on the stage, his transition to television (great discipline for actors), and his move to film.  I think it would be safe to say that nearly everyone knows William Shatner, but I don't think too many of us know too much about the man himself.  In this book we get to see a funny side which I don't think was very evident (at least not to me) about the man, until perhaps more recently.  With great humor and tongue-in-cheek, and always with a twinkle in his eye, Mr. Shatner eloquently tells us about his career, the people he's worked with (always a kind word and never a slight against anyone - very gentlemanly, Mr. Shatner), the things he and they got up to, his love of cars and horses, his family (four marriages), his travels, his stumbling upon Star Trek (who knew the show only ran for three years and that they only made seventy nine episodes?!), his enormous popularity as a result of playing Captain Kirk, his "singing," the game shows, and so much more.  It's not a very revealing read as such but he does tell a great number of stories, all of which are entertaining and interesting.  And when he thought his career wasn't going anywhere, Denny Crane, the puffed-up layer in Boston Legal came his way and changed his life.  He also tells the story of the tragic death of his third wife Nerine and the controversy surrounding her death.
Do visit Mr. Shatner's website.
Conclusion - You're in for a treat with this book, and I just know every Star Trek fan on the planet is going to find this a great read.  I found it most enjoyable.
