Screen Doors and Sweet Tea - Recipes and Tales from a Southern Cook
by Martha Hall Foose
Clarkson Potter/Publishers
ISBN 0-307-35140-1
Published April 2008 - Hardcover - 242 pages - $32.50

This is a rather fun book in that the author has included anecdotes and snippets of her Mississippi Delta life along with her recipes.  It's a charming look at southern country life, her travels, and culinary experiences, and a peek at some of the local folk.  Martha Hall Foose is the executive chef at the Viking Cooking School and was born and raised in Mississippi.  She also opened two bakeries after studying at the pastry school l'Ecole Lenôtre in France.  In this delightful book she covers Mail Box Happy Hour and Pick Up Party Food; Luncheons, Salads, and Dressings; Gumbos, Soups, Dumplings, and a Bisque; Dishes from the Backyard and Kitchen; Field Peas, Greens, and the Like; Hot from the Oven, and The Sweetest Things - not your average contents page.  Some of her mouthwatering dishes are Ain't No Thing, Chicken Wing; Three Bean Salad (one of my favorite salads); Comeback Sauce; Monday Red Beans and Rice; Barq's Root Beet Glazed Ham (sounds yummy), and Leontynes.  I loved the stories and notes that come with the recipes.
Partially illustrated.  No nutritional guides.
Conclusion - An absolute joy of a cookbook.
