What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Prostate Cancer
by Glenn J. Bubley, M.D. with Winifred Conkling
Warner Books
ISBN 0-446-69080-5
Published January 2005 - Paperback - 253 pages - $14.95

Now, just because I don't have a prostate, doesn't mean I don't need to know about them.  Dr. Bubley says in his book, "In the United States, men have an alarmingly high one-in-six lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer...", which, ten years ago, wasn't that possible to talk about.  These days however, men are more willing to be screened earlier - just as women check for lumps in their breasts and have PAP tests.  We take precautionary action and men can too, by having a PSA test.  The good news is that prostate cancer is nearly always treatable, depending on the person that is.  The information in this books tells us what the prostate is for, the different types of cancer and their treatments, the different options you have, and how your diet can reduce your risk.  The job of the prostate is to produce "most of a man's semen" which consists of sperm, prostatic fluid, and seminal versicle fluid.  Many men experience an enlarged prostate later in life which could mean a decreased flow of urine through the prostatic urethra which passes through the center of the prostate.  Most notably, according to this doctor, is that when a man starts experiencing problems urinating, he should get things checked out - like having to go often, having to get up at night, a decrease in the force of the urine stream, and pain when urinating.  He also has relevant questions you can ask your own doctor and he discusses the various prostate removal procedures.  Often, men are in shock (as is anyone) when they learn they have cancer, so reading this book will arm you with important information so you know what to expect and how to deal with it.
Conclusion - Very interesting and informative. BookBrowser
