The dustjacket of this book says that there are 25 potato salads and 20 different ways to make mashed potatoes.  I knew the potato was a very versatile vegetable (fried, baked, boiled, hash browns, gratin, scalloped, chips, etc.—you get the picture), but I never dreamed you could make one or two dishes so many different ways.  Author Marlena Spieler offers not only home-grown recipes, but ones from faraway places like Tuscany, Greece, Andalucia, Morocco, India, Scotland, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Persia, Poland, Peru, Sweden, Ireland, Malaysia, and many more exotic places.  On offer in her book are the following categories: Breakfast Potatoes; Tapas, Meze & Antipasti; Potato Soup; Potato Salad; Boiled, Stewed & Saucy Sides; Mashed and Crushed, on Your Plate or in a Bowl; Baked, Roasted & Gratinéed: As a Sideshow or Main Event; Fried in a Pan: Alongside Anything!, and Potatoes for Dinner!  You can also read about the history of the potato.  Mouth-watering recipes that appealed to me include: Potato and Feta Omelet; Cazilli; Grilled Marinated Potato Slices (to die for); Heta Peju's Ausician Salad; Old Country Potato Salad; Hot Buttered Potatoes with Frankfurt Green Sauce; Basil Mashed Potatoes, and Roesti.  There's something for everyone in this action-packed cookbook—you can feel Marlena's enthusiasm, and to me, that's always a good sign.
