Animals are not the easiest subjects to paint, at least they aren't for me.  This book by Paul Apps makes it look so easy, especially with the tracings to help one along.  Once you've done one, you'll get the hang of things and you can experiment and expand on your own.  The Materials discussed in the book include Painting Surfaces, and we're encouraged to use whatever we feel comfortable using, and to take App's suggestions as just that: suggestions.  Some of the subjects in this book include a Yellow Labrador puppy, a German Short-haired Pointer puppy, a Springer Spaniel, and a Yorkshire Terrier.  I liked the step-by-step instructional illustrations as they show exception detail, especially with things like eyes and noses.  Using the tracings you'll be able to paint dogs and puppies with confidence.
Conclusion - A lovely collection of dogs to paint using the tracings as guides.  A great idea for anyone wanting to try these subjects.
