The Grand Ole Opry - The Making of An American Icon
by Colin Escott
Center Street
ISBN 1-931722-86-2
Published November 2006 - Hardcover - 251 pages - $24.99

The Grand Ole Opry is synonymous with Country Music and the legends who performed on its hallowed stage.  This history of the Grand Dame is phenomenal, with huge and influential names gracing the stage and dressing rooms, the likes of Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and more.  Over eighty years old, the Grand Ole Opry's history is rich, and with recollections by many who played there, make this an interesting book, especially for collectors.  There are many old pictures showing the history of getting things underway, from bands and performers, to old billboards and ticket stubs.  It's chocabloc with quotes and anecdotes and is fascinating reading about how some of the early members got started.  The tradition of the Grand Ole Opry is unsurpassed and most people have heard of it.  Not having grown up in this country, and neither in the 30s, 40s, or 50s, many of the country names were unfamiliar.  There were a few, of course, that I'd heard of.  It was later in the book that I could relate more to the contemporary performers.  Check out some of the most outrageous costumes.
Conclusion - Very interesting.
