Indian food is one of my all-time favorite foods so I was naturally delighted to review Madhur Jaffrey's famous cookbook. Ms. Jaffrey is such a distinguished and innovative Indian cook, and she's been tried and successfully tested for years. This is just one of her many cookbooks. Before you dive into her recipes, it's a good idea to read through the list of "spices, seasonings, and flavorings", as well as "techniques" pages, so that you'll know a little bit more about what goes into Indian cooking. (What you can't get locally, you can order online.) Categories in this book include: Soups (not a tradition in India), Snacks, and Savories; Meat; Poultry and Eggs; Fish; Vegetables; Pulses; Accompaniments (Breads and Rice); Relishes, Chutneys, and Pickles, and Sweets. Enticing recipes, such as Lamb with Spinach; Whole Leg of Lamb in a Spicy Yogurt Sauce; Lemony Chicken with Cilantro; Chicken in a Red Sweet Pepper Sauce; Shrimp with Zucchini; Beets with Onions; Cauliflower with Fennel and Mustard Seeds (yum); Naad Bread, and Apple, Peach, and Apricot Chutney (to die for!) abound throughout this book. Beautifully illustrated and no nutritional guides. To help you get started, we are given menu suggestions which are very helpful. Please see my review of Ms. Jaffrey's childhood in India book.
