When it's wintry cold outside, there's nothing nicer than having a warm head if you have to go out.  No hat?  No problem.  Knitting is a great past-time (or occupation if you're looking for ways to make extra money), and if you can produce wearable and warm hats, why not?  Designer Cathy Carron shares her forty designs from which to choose your favorite style.  Don't be put off by the given colors as you can personalize any design to suit your color scheme.  And you can pick and choose between knitting a beret, a toque, a cap, a bonnet, a hat, a kerchief, or even a beanie or a stocking cap or a balaclava (really cozy).  There's even a fedora and a pillbox you can try your hand at.  My favorite designs include the Sherpa Hat (pg 25), the Tweed Cloche (pg 31), and the pretty Headband (pg 61).  The gorgeous Textured Pillbox is also a winner.  I never thought of, and neither have I seen, beads on knitted (or crocheted) hats such as those on page 37.  What a lovely idea.  Another great idea is the ponytail hat — what does one do with one's ponytail?  Knitting is easy, and warm ears are necessary.  You can look at making many hats to sell at flea and craft markets and online.  Many of these designs can be unisex.
