Recipes From a Very Small Island
by Linda Greenlaw and Martha Greenlaw
Hyperion
ISBN 1-4013-0073-1
Published July 2005 - Hardcover - 224 pages - $25.95

After some interesting bits of information from author Linda Greenlaw and her mother Martha Greenlaw, about where they live on an island off the coast of Maine, you can dive into their New England recipes.  Mom Martha says they've put all the lobster, crab, clam, mussel, and shrimp recipes together, as have they done with the blueberry and cranberry recipes.  The meat and poultry are also together.  Their recipes are traditional New England fare and perhaps could not be made by those who don't have access to quahog clams, mussels, oysters, or sole, but there are notes here and there about substituting certain fish.  There's a lot to be said about living on an island where there's plenty of fish (or having friends who are fishermen) around, but I'd miss the city some, and I am envious as I adore islands.  Linda and her mother's recipes are both relatively easy to prepare and don't call for unheard of ingredients.  Their sense of humor is abundant throughout and I enjoyed their anecdotes.  Some of the recipes that appealed to me include: Maine Shrimp Remoulade; Head Harbor Lobster and Haddock Casserole (I love haddock but haven't seen it in stores - any mild, flaky fish can be used as a substitute); Grilled Marinated Scallops with Ginger and Sesame; Island Lobster Rolls (a New England standard); Fresh Codfish Cakes with Chili Mayo, and Simple Grilled Swordfish with Lemon-Caper Butter.  How about this for a surf and turf: Beef Tenderloin Stuffed with Lobster?  There are also vegetarian dishes and soups and salads as well as breads, biscuits, and desserts.  Linda gives a humorous description of a "Beginner's Guide to Clambake" which is more or less how food gatherings go.  Lots of illustrations.
Conclusion - I loved the "tone" of this book which gave me a few chuckles here and there.
