Bobby Flay's Burgers, Fries & Shakes
Clarkson Potter/Publisher
ISBN 978-0-307-46063-9
Published April 2009 - Hardcover - 160 pages - $25.95

Nothing says "American food" quite as succinctly as does "hamburger."  It also says "heart attack" just as succinctly.  Add the combination of fries and shakes and you're well on your way to a coronary.  Just thinking about all that fat is nauseating - fat in the meat, fat in the cheese, fat in the fries, the onion rings, and the milkshakes.  That being said, Flay says in his "Burger Essentials" chapter, "I like chuck because of its relatively high fat content; when you look for it in your market, check to see that it is listed as 80 percent lean, 20 percent fat."  Flay offers these recipes which sound appealing: Bistro Burger, Caesar Salad Burger, California Burger, Greek Burger, and Oaxacan Burger.  These recipes however, scared me: Bolo Burger (mayo, cheese, and ham); Breakfast Burger (cheese, eggs, bacon, and shoestring fries - eeeeek); Crunchburger (cheese, mayo, and potato chips), and Four-Cheese Burger (say no more).  On top of all this, we're given recipes for French fries, fried onion rings (buttermilk onion rings!), sauces (chipotle ketchup, barbecue seasoning) and milkshakes (whole milk and syrups!) which include Toasted Almond Milkshake and probably the grossest-sounding name I've ever heard, Peanut Butter-Banana-Marshmallow Milkshake.  Now, I do like a burger now and then, but not smothered in fatty cheese, sans fries, and possibly, occasionally, a chocolate shake.
Beautifully illustrated.  No nutritional guides (no surprise!).

Conclusion - I believe in moderation.  This is overkill and completely unnecessary in today's climate of obesity and people wanting to eat healthy meals.
